My girlfriend just got fired a few days ago from her old job because the company she was working with, has done very lousy in the last year, and the crisis did take its toll on the local economy. So they went to use the usual remedy in this situation, cutting personnel, and because she was newer and less qualified than many of her colleagues, she (together with many others) was a sure victim.

So there we were, looking for a new job, hunting down jobs on the net and in the pages of the local newspapers. This was also a good occasion for me to see just how much have job requirements changed within the last years. unlike in the past, most of today's jobs require the candidate to possess a driver license, given to the fact that many of today's careers require the candidate to move continuously from one place to the other, travelling often tens of miles, if not hundreds in one day. Sometimes, some companies offer the candidate the opportunity of driving a new car (company car) and go to the customer personally.

In the end, my girlfriend finally decided it was time to take car driving lessons and to get herself a driver license (finally).

I really wanted to help her so I decided to pay for her driving school. We began looking on the internet for driving schools to see what choices did we have. Well, a lot of things have really changed since I took car driving lessons. The most important (and most evident) thing is that if, in the past, to hold a driver license was not a fundamental requirement for the majority of job offers, the present changes things. And if, in the past, car driving schools were cheaper, today they are not. Depending on the area where you live, a course (25-30 car driving lessons) can cost you up to 600 pounds.

I paid for the school, and we arranged to start the car driving lessons within the week.

So she began learning how to drive, and she took the study material pretty seriously too. After having finished all of the written material, she started taking the lessons on the road with the school's instructor. Well....that did not go pretty well the first time, she was emotional and, because of this she confused the brake with the acceleration pedal and caused a car crash. Well....it took a while, but she finally got out of it, and took her driver license making almost no mistakes at all during the exam. That is something!

That was sometime ago, soon after that I found her a job as a representative of an insurance group, now she earns more than she did at her previous job, and her career perspectives look a lot better than they did before.
